The centre employs 6 professionals of which 1 doctor, 2 nurses, 1 psychiatrist, 1 social worker,1 administrators and a manager.
Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction offering detoxification and maintenance programs. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 30 mg.
Currently the centre treats 150 patients, wich is the maximum capacity. There is a waiting list of 4 weeks.

The centre offers:
- medical care
- social assistance
- psycho-therapy
- day detoxification
- advocacy

Violence can get patients expelled from treatment.
The centre has no possibility to provide methadone to patients who receive methadone in another city/region and who are visiting.

If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis the address of the patients has to be within the health authority area.

Specialist Drug Service

The centre has a Specialist Drug Service staff; 1 senior drug worker, 4 drug workers of which two registered nurses and one social worker and a nursing staff which consists of  1 ward manager, 1 clinical team leader, staff nurses, enrolled nurses and nursing assistants. There is a doctor; senior house officer and a consultant psychiatrist.

This inpatient drug service is being run on an acute psychiatric ward for people who wish to come of drugs, need to stabilize or need to be titrated on to a methadone prescription

Violence and dealing with drugs can get patients expelled from treatment.

- urine checks

Procedures for patients who receive methadone in another city/region and who are visiting the centre for a short period:
The centre should be informed beforehand by letter or fax.
When visiting the patient has to present a letter from his/her doctor.
This letter should mention:
- identity
- treatment history
- dose and period for which the provision of methadone is requested
- address client will be residence within area of south -east london

There are no costs involved for the patient.

If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis procedures are no different.

Procedures for taking patients for a short time:
The centre should be informed beforehand by phone, letter or fax. A written confirmation will be needed.
The information necessary is:
- identity
- treatment history
- dose and period for which methadone is requested
- references where information can be checked
- referral to a liaison to arrange an appointment to allow them to undertake prescribing.
 
When visiting the patient has to bring a letter from his doctor or key worker.
There are no costs involved.
 
If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis the procedures are no different.

The Avalon centre, St. Christophers Hospital
 
The centre employs professionals of which, 0.3 psychiatrists, 3.5 nurses, 0.5 social workers, 0.3 educators, 1 administrator and 0.5 manager.
Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction with abstinence as the ultimate goal offering detoxification and maintenance programs. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 30-50 mg.
Currently the centre treats 30 patients, this is one of the three centres in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire with a maximum capacity of 196 patients.
There is no maximum duration of treatment and no waiting list.
 
The centre offers:
- social assistance
- other medication
- psychiatric care
- psycho-therapy
 
The centre is also involved with pharmacies who dispense and supervise if necessary. The people in the target group are individuals who wish to change their behaviour but are unable to do so in non-specialist settings.
 
The centre demands:
- urine checks
- mandatory meetings, evidence of reduction of illicit use.
 
Non-attendance and violence can get patients expelled from treatment, illicit drug use may lead to loss of prescription but not to expulsion.
 
The centre does not have the possibility to provide methadone to patients who receive methadone in another city/region who are visiting their region.
 
If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis they will not prescribe until they have established satisfactory evidence of the need. If the patient was, in good faith, prescribed a higher dose they will allow time to adjust.
