Portsmouth City Substance Misuse service
 
The centre employs 20 professionals of which 4 psychiatrists, 10 nurses, 2 social workers and 4 administrators.
Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction and abstinence offering detoxification and maintenance programs. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 50 mg.
Currently the centre treats 196 patients, with a maximum capacity of 196 patients.
There is no maximum duration of treatment and no waiting list.
 
The centre offers:
- medical care
- social assistance
- other medication
- psychiatric care
- counselling
 
The service is linked with other agencies (e.g. probation) and does the dispensing via pharmacies.
 
The centre demands:
- urine checks
- mandatory meetings with nurses
 
Non-attendance, relapse, breach of contract and violence can get patients expelled from treatment.
 
The centre does not have the possibility to provide methadone to patients who receive methadone in another city/region who are visiting their region.
 
If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis they have to reside in the area for at least 6 months.

The centre employs 70 professionals of which 3 doctors, 8 nurses, 1 psychiatist, 3 social worker, 1 educator, 5 administrators and 5 manager and others (probation, prison workers etc).
Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction offering maintenance programs. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 60-80 mg.
Currently the centre treats about 400 patients
There is no maximum duration of treatment, there is a waiting list.
 
The centre offers:
- medical care
- other medication
- psychiatric care
- psycho-therapy
- other services
The centre demands:
- urine checks
 
Non-attendance and violence can get patients expelled from treatment.
The centre has the possibility to provide methadone to patients who receive methadone in another city/region and who are   visiting for a short time; procedures:
The centre should be informed beforehand by letter, phone or fax.
The information necessary is:
- identity
- treatment history
- dose and period for which methadone is requested
- references where information can be checked
When visiting the patient has to bring a letter from his doctor.
There are no costs involved.
 
If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis the procedures are different.

Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction offering detoxification and maintenance programs. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 70 mg.
Currently the centre treats 200 patients, with a maximum capacity of 200 patients.
There is no maximum duration of treatment and a waiting list of approximately 2 weeks.
 
The centre offers:
- medical care
- social assistance
- other medication
- psychiatric care
- needle exchange
- HEP b/c testing and immunisation
 
The Service has 120 clients in shared care with their own GP.
 
The centre demands:
- two weekly attendance
- urine checks
 
Non-attendance and violence can get patients expelled from treatment.
 
The centre does not have the possibility to provide methadone to patients who receive methadone in another city/region who are visiting their region.
 
Procedures for taking patients for a short time:
The centre should be informed beforehand by letter or fax.
The information necessary is:
- identity
- treatment history
- dose and period for which methadone is requested
- references where information can be checked

When visiting the patient has to bring a letter from his doctor.
There are no costs involved.
 
If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis the procedures are no different. Except that they have to prove that they live in the area.

Substance Misuse Service
The centre employs 15 professionals of which 2 psychiatrists, 4 nurses, 1 social worker, 3 administrators and 1 manager and 4 others (1 pharmacy development worker, 1 outreach, 1 probation, 1 support worker).
Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction offering detoxification programs. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 40 mg. Maximum dose prescribed is 80 mg.
Currently the centre treats about 50 patients, wich is the maximum capacity.
There is no maximum duration of treatment and a waiting list of at least 3 months.
 
The centre offers:
- medical care
- other medication
- needle exchange
 
The centre demands:
- urine checks
- new/ chaotic clients are on daily observed dose of methadone
 
Non-compliance and violence can get patients expelled from treatment.
 
The centre does not have the possibility to provide methadone to patients who receive methadone in another city/region who are visiting their region.
 
If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis a referal from an agency that is prescribing at present is required. However there is still a waiting list.

Under 500 ml methadone taken out of country a letter is needed. For  prescribing over 500 ml then we apply for a home office license and give acarening letter.
