Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 60 mg.
Currently the centre treats 139 patients, with a maximum capacity of 120 patients.
There is a maximum duration of treatment of 2 months and a waiting list of approximately 3 months. We have a needle exchange and a drop-in on another site. Prescribing however is only done from St. Anns.
 
The centre offers:

- social assistance
- counselling and alternative therapies.
 
The centre demands:
- urine checks
- A minimum of monthly attendance to see key worker.
Non-attendance, lying, not picking up the script for over 14 days and violence can get patients expelled from treatment.
 
Procedures for taking patient for a short time:
The centre should be informed beforehand by phone, letter or fax. They have to have a weeks notice because they only have a doctor on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The information necessary is:

- dose and period for which methadone is requested
- references where information can be checked
- a named worker to liase with
 
When visiting the patient has to bring a letter from his doctor.
The costs involved are the dispensing fees of £ 7 per dispensing.
They have to apply to the home office to make sure clients will not encounter legal problems.
 
If clients want to enter the program on a permanent basis the procedures are no different except for the fact that the client will have to go on the waiting list.
