Methadone prescription has to be approved by the Kantonsarzt and is dispensed through General Practitioners with a special license (Fortbildungsnachweis), pharmacies and DTA (Drogentherapeutisches Ambulatorium), which is a specialised drug service.

To obtain a methadone prescription the patient has to contact the "Sozialmedizinischer Dienst" (department for social medicine) and fill in a request which will be past through to the Kantonsarzt who has to approve the request. Methadone will be dispensed through General Practitioners and pharmacies.

Methadone is dispensed through General Practitioners and the pharmacies in Sarnen and Engelberg.
