Currently there are about 12 GPs and 2 psychiatristsinvolved in methadonesubstitution programme, although any GP can prescribe methadone. Any prescription has to be approved by the Kantonsarzt. The system is based on doctors' willing to prescribe Methadone to a drug department. The indication-drug supervision centre and methadone-treatment have to allow treatment, than the patient is send to the kantonsarzt. The following information can be applied for the whole of Kanton Glarus.

There are about 70 patients in Glarus. Treatment is based upon harm reduction offering detoxification and maintenance programmes.

Procedures for patients who receive methadone in another region and who are visiting for a short period

The kanton needs to be informed beforehand by phone or letter.

This letter should mention:

- identity

- treatment history

- dose and period for which the provision of methadone is requested

The patient should present a letter from his/her doctor, there are costs involved depending on treatment, tablets, consultation etc.

There is no maximum of treatment and no waiting list

The centre offers:

- medical care

- social assistance

- other medication

- psychiatric care

- psycho-therapy

 

The centre demands:

-daily attendance (2/3 times a week)

- mandatory meetings with social work

Violence and non-attendance can get patient expelled.
