- The patient needs an approved prescription to
receive methadone through a GP or pharmacy. The approval for methadone prescription can be

- If a patient already is in possession of an
approved (official) methadone prescription of another Kanton or country - for a short
period of time - he can directly address the Kantonsarzt, if the patient knows a pharmacy,

- The patient has to contact the following two
clinics first. They will apply for an approval of the methadone prescription at the
Kantonsarzt.

- The centre employs 11 professionals of which 3
doctors, 3 (psychiatric-)nurses, 3 social workers and an administrator.
- Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction
offering detoxification and maintenance programmes. The average dose of methadone
prescribed is 60 mg.
- Currently the centre treats 135 patients. There is
no waiting list for methadone treatment.
- The centre concentrates on patients that are
difficult to be treated by General Practitioners, e.g. patients with severe psychological
problems or infectious diseases (Hepatitis C, HIV/Aids). Other patients will, after the
substitution treatment is initiated by the centre, be referred back to their General
Practitioner.

- The Kantonsarzt approves of a methadone treatment
up to 15 months. If an extension of the treatment is needed, the patient (through the
clinic) needs to apply again for further treatment.
- Another way to receive methadone is through BADAL,
which is an independent clinic that prescribes an dispenses methadone. They do not need an
approval of the Kantonsarzt to prescribe methadone. If you enter their programme you
obtain the methadone through them and cannot get methadone through any other instances.
There are contacts with other drug advisory institutions.

patient, its maximum capacity being 600 patients. The average dose of methadone provided
is 56 mg. There is no maximum duration of treatment and no waiting list.
