Two units of the CAD are prescribing centres not dispensing centres. Provision of methadone is done by the "Centro dispensador del Plan de Drogas" (unit 3) which is situated in the same building as the units.
Centro asistencial de drogodependencias de Santander, Equipo 1

The centre usually does not take patients (from abroad) for a short period of time. They are helpful if a substitution address in the region is looked for.
The centre employs 5 professionals of which 1 doctor, 1 medical assistant, 1 psychologist and a social worker.
Treatment philosophy detoxification and rehabilitation. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 70 mg.
Currently the centre treats 50 patients, with a maximum capacity of 70-80 patients. The waiting list takes two months.

The centre offers:
- medical care
- social assistance
- psycho-therapy
- other medication (e.g. Naltrexon)

The centre demands:
- daily attendance
- urine checks
- mandatory meetings with social work
- psycho-therapy

Violence and falsifying urine test can get patient expelled from treatment.

Centro asistencial de drogodependencias de Santander, Equipo 2

The centre employs 5 professionals of which 1 doctor, 1 psychologist, 1 social worker and 2 administrators.
Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction offering detoxification and maintenance programmes.
Currently the centre treats 50 patients in the methadone programme, with a maximum capacity of 55 patients. The waiting list takes 30 days. There is no maximum duration of treatment.

The centre offers:

- psycho-therapy
- other medication

The centre demands:
- daily attendance
- urine checks
- mandatory meetings with social work

Drug trafficking, manipulating urine checks and violence can get patient expelled from treatment.

Currently the centre treats 150 patients, with a maximum capacity of 180 patients. There is no waiting list.

The centre demands urine checks.

Non-attendance, relapse and violence can get patients expelled from treatment.

Procedures for taking patients for a short time (one week):
The centre should be informed beforehand by phone, letter or fax.
The information necessary is:
- identity
- treatment history
- dose and period for which methadone is requested
- references where information can be checked

When visiting the patient has to bring a letter from his doctor.
There are no costs involved.

If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis the procedures are different:
Investigations and evaluation of patient by the medical, social and psychological staff.

Currently the centre treats 140 patients, with a maximum capacity of 170 patients. There is a waiting-list up to 10 days.

Procedures for taking patient for a SHORT period of TIME:
The centre should be informed beforehand through the "Plan Regional de Drogas Diputacion Provincial Cantabria".
The information necessary is:
- identity
- treatment history
- dose and period for which methadone is requested

When visiting the patient has to bring a letter from his doctor. There are no costs involved.

Procedures for patients who want to enter the programme on a PERMANENT BASIS are no different.
