Substitution Programme of Athens / Athens Unit of OKANA

the main goal of this programme is detoxification.
No patients from outside Athens are accepted, except for patients of the Thessaloniki programme.
Rules are very strict in Greece and methadone is on the list of illegal drugs! There are no forms that could prevent patients from outside Greece to encounter legal problems.

The centre is able to treat 200 patients at a time.
Patients who want to enter the programme on a permanent basis have to apply and are put on a waiting list, which currently counts 1300 people!
The centre employs four doctors/psychiatrists, four nurses, three social workers, three educators and four people are involved in management and administrative tasks.

The centre offers to patients:
-medical care
-social assistance
-psychiatric care and psycho-therapy
-other medication than methadone

The centre demands from patients:
-daily attendance
-urine checks
mandatory meetings
-abstinence from cocaine, benzo’s, etc.

The centre expels patients in case of relapse, non-attendance, violence, continuing abuse of cocaine, benzo’s , etc.
