SAN-Koordinationsstelle

There are 8 social workers and 1 managers co-ordinating everything for the whole of upper Austria (they create the links and networking).

Treatment philosophy is based upon harm reduction offering detoxification, maintenance programs and co-ordination. The average dose of methadone prescribed is 90 mg.

Currently 300 patients are treated in the whole of upper Austria.

There is no maximum duration of treatment and there is no waiting list.

 

They have links to drug advisory centres, to GP's, pharmacies, health authorities and day clinics (Landesnervenklinik in Linz, psychiatric clinic)

 

Besides methadone, other morphines are used in treatment as well: substitol, subutex, buprenorphine.

 

Non-attendance and violence can get patients expelled from treatment.

 

Procedures for taking patients for a short time:

The centre should be informed beforehand by phone, letter, fax or email.

The information necessary is:

- identity

- dose and period for which methadone is requested

- references where information can be checked

- to which village/city does the patient plan to go

 

When visiting the patient has to bring a letter from his doctor.

There are costs involved, about ATS 50.- daily at the pharmacy (prescription).

Official forms for customs, police etc. to make sure the patient will not encounter any legal problems in case of different policy on methadone of country to be visited exist. There is a certification -schengen implementing covention article 75- if he/she brings methadone with him/her.

If patients want to enter the program on a permanent basis the procedures are different. The patient needs a drugprescription from an Austrian GP. The Koordinationsstelle arranges the links (to a centre for psycho-social assistance).
