This is the home page of the First International Conference on Alcohol and Harm Reduction ‘Towards a comprehensive alcohol policy in countries in transition and developing countries’.  The conference was held in Recife, Brazil, on August 28, 29 and 30, 2002.

During three days, Recife was the center of the first international meeting to discuss harm reduction and alcohol use.
Representatives from Latin American countries, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as guests from other countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States, Italy and Holland were participating in this event. The Conference provided good opportunities for exchanging knowledge and experiences, which support the developments of harm reduction based public policies on alcohol in countries of the participants involved. A total of 570 persons participated.

 

 

 

 

Besides policy makers, practitioners and researchers, representatives from a number of other groups were participating in the conference as well, such as prisoners, sex workers and native Indians (see picture)
